Metaphorically Speaking

“Metaphorically Speaking” is an exhibit focusing on artworks that include elements of symbolism, contrasting imagery, and even humor to compel the viewer to understand a work of art.

While clues to meaning may be found through the imagery, compositions, or even the titles of the artwork, the interpretation of the art is left to the viewer to explore and contemplate.

Metro 31 [Redux}

We are happy to be hosting Metro 31 [redux], a juried small works exhibition presented by City Without Walls. The group exhibition features 58 works by 48 artists all all styles and mediums.

cWOW’s annual Metro Show was created over 30 years ago to celebrate the work of talented artists from the metropolitan region. We are delighted to help them bring this exciting event back into fruition.

Pure Photography

This will be an exploration and grand retrospective look into photography in its natural, purest form – from the days of film to the more recent digital. Photographer Barry Gray curates works from five renowned photographers, whose collective portfolio spans four decades.

Off the Shelf : A Tribute to June Cater

Gallery 1978 remembers our good friend and mentor, June Cater, who passed away this past April 2016. She gifted the building, which now houses 1978 Maplewood Arts Center, to the Township of Maplewood in 2000. June’s legacy lives on and is embodied by this center for the visual arts. This exhibit brings together the artistic expressions and ideas of the tireless volunteer board members, who have met June’s challenge of creating a vibrant arts center for the community.

What's Beneath?

May 1st - 29th, 2016

Drawing is an expansive art term, encompassing many styles, methods and media with one fairly consistent characteristic: drawing involves the direct hand of the artist.

Objects created by the act of drawing are not necessarily limited to impressions made upon a surface. While the suggestion of the artist's marks maybe evident, it is often what's beneath the surface of the image that captivates and engages the viewer to connect with the artwork.

Abstract photography is non-representational and communicates primarily through line, shape, form, color, pattern, texture and use of light. This exhibit from New Jersey Photography Forum presents a comprehensive look at abstract photography, including straight shots, manipulated photographs, and those combined with other images, or mixed media.

Juan Antonio Picasso

The Creative Cuban Connection

In honor of Black History Month, 1978 Gallery presents The Creative Cuban Connection : Juan Antonio Picasso.

Juan Antonio Picasso , who resides in Havana  and is a descendant of Pablo Picasso, has been invited by the 1978 Maplewood Arts Center to be the featured artist for Black History Month.

While he admires and is inspired by his famous ancestor, he feels his own art - inspired by his Afro-Cuban ancestors - which is infused with Afro-Cuban symbols and ideas , speaks for him. He leaves his symbolic imagery open to self interpretation

The Chairs of Inclusion project represents the convergence of inclusion, expressive arts, and community.

“Negatively Positive” is a contradiction in terms offering all kinds of creative possibilities. It suggests conflict and contradiction and can open up a visual dialogue about how we process the world. Left to interpretation it can bring the exploration of spatial variations or the search for a deeper more personal discovery.

The Intersection of Collage and Encaustic

March 21st - April 19th, 2015
Closing party: April 19th, 2015 2-5 pm

This exhibit features combinations of images, made to tell stories. Collages usually are made of repurposed paper objects; encaustics use wax as a paint. The combination of the two adds a level of depth to the images. Some of the entries are solely collages; others are a combination of the two media. They all have a very personal brand of story telling.

1978 Annual Members Show

Gallery 1978 Celebrates its Friends each year with an exhibit of the art of its members.

Because of the Friends of 1978 support, Gallery 1978 can provide public programs connected to it’s exhibits, do workshops for special needs guests, lead community art projects such at the Maplewood 4th of July and produce extensive exhibits such as Promises, Promises that explored human trafficking and the annual Black History Month Exhibit, this year celebrating gallerist Vicktor Davson

This year the exhibit is honoring our great friend and mentor, Fran Willner. Fran passed on in December 2014 at 96 but her incredible spirit lingers on.

Generations

The Generations exhibit features the art of parents and their children in an eclectic blend of paintings, prints, photographs, drawings, collages, and shadow boxes.

“I’m really excited about this exhibit”, states co-curator Mansa K. Mussa. “It’s a rare opportunity to see how the work of two generations of artists can interact in both contrast and in comparison”.

Phyllis Carlin : A Life Remembered

It is with profound sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our dear friend, wonderful human being and a great artist, Phyllis Carlin.

Phyllis was an inspiration and an amazing artist, as well as an enthusiastic Board member. Her art and spirit lives on.

The Quarter Mile Print Show

It's a Family Affair

The monotype is a direct printing process that lends itself to public participation. Fundamentally it is the transference of an image from one surface to another by means of pressure, either by hand or machine, for the “Quarter Mile Print,” the press was a steamroller.

Emma Amos

Art that inspires LOOKING.LEARNING.LIVING

February 2 - March 24 2013
Opening Reception : Sunday February 10th 2-6pm

Emma Amos uses applications from several disciplines; combining painting, printmaking and textiles. These large, multi-layerd works may be bordered with African fabric, incorporate sewing, applique and quilting or her own weavings, each element combining to make a seamless work of art. Her subjects are a commentary on the preconceived notions about art and society.

"I hope that the subjects of my paintings dislodge, question, and tweak prejudices, rules, and notions relating to art and who makes it, poses for it, shows it, and buys it."

Her artwork is included in the collections of MOMA, NJ State Museum, and the Newark Museum, and has been the recipient of prestigious grants and awards.

Let's Mix it Up : photographers explore mixed media

This show will feature work by various artists who have encorporated digital imagery with their work. They have extending their imagery with fiber art, encaustic and unusual printing techniques

Curated by Dorothy Kuehn. Dorothy has been creating custom surfaces for digital printing using specialized coatings called digital grounds. These materials allow artists to incorporate digital printing with traditional artist techniques.

Seeing Between the Lines is an exhibit where the media, technique, or presentation compels you to look again and “ SEE “ that there is more than what was initially perceived. You may see an illusion of strands or braids of hair that are painted – not photographed or lace that is dry point etched –not collaged. Visit artwork which lunges forward when seen though a 3D lens and spatial elements which are not abstracted lines and shapes, but rather structural landforms.
